Austria, the Violent Nation
National identity was sought in cultural cliches, mostly through the music of mozart and schubert. As late as 19 56, only forty nine % of the austrian population saw their country as an austrian nation. After the end of the hapsburg monarchy, whether we will see the emergence of a wider consensus on a european identity remains unclear. However, this question will be one of the major political tasks of the years to come.
