The stories in genesis three leading up to babylon are a domino, a chain of domino effects about the fracturing of families on all their levels. So in the story of adam and even the snake, they take what is good in their eyes. They want to see wisdom that they think will make them like god, even though they are already like god. And when they do so, they look at each other, ah, and now they each have their own wisdom about what is good and bad.
