The Natural Process of Friendship
In a friendship, there are certain things that you wouldn't address because it's kind of understood that they are burned up by the fire of love. So I think that yeah, mortal sin is just the type of thing that needs addressing in a serious way for which the sacrament of penance is instituted. But when it comes to the church's tradition and making a distinction between mortal and venial sins, here we can kind of compare the Western practice to the Eastern practice, which doesn't admit so much of fine shades. In the first few centuries of the church, you would have to join the order of penitence if you committed certain big sins.
