The History of the Dollege Picture Gallery
When the gallery opened in 1870 as Helen was saying it was the first purpose-built public art gallery in England. In 1842 the grammar school was established for the education of 60 local boys already showing a commitment to art education and young people. The Crystal Palace opened in Sidenham Hill to host a great exhibition of 1851 due to money being paid by railway companies schools could expand into new buildings. I wonder how we can make art and education accessible who is the public that we catering to today what restrictions do potential visitors face when they want to come to the gallery and see art taken president from the pavilion.
