CHAPTER

The Catacombs Under Paris

Morsseur-Sach's late music was obsessed with death, so this movement fits perfectly into that theme. It is a depiction of the catacombs underneath Paris. This in my opinion is one of Hartmann's best and most convincing paintings. A shadowy, misty depiction of three men deep inside of the Paris catacombs with a pile of skulls next to them. The movement has no real melody. All this fun is suddenly interrupted as if the thought of Hartmann’s death suddenly hits Morsseur - Sach full in the face.
