The Penalties of Excommunication
In 1 Corinthians, St. Paul is writing to the church in Corinth and he says, essentially, that there is the story among you that even doesn't even have an among pagans. Treat him as you would, essentially a stranger. Basically, he is not a brother in the Lord. That's the first example of excommunication that we have here in Scripture. And that's for very serious things. And it's a very serious penalty. It's all meant to be oriented towards healing though. In the danger of death, any priest, even if someone's excommunicated, can absolve from every sin and excommunication.
