Lincoln and the Confederacy
In 1861, seven southern states have left the Union and formed their own nation. Before 1864 is out, South Carolina becomes the first state to secede for fear that a Lincoln presidency will constrain slavery. At the root of all the problems is the disagreement over slavery. In his inaugural speech on the 4th of March 1861, he does so under the threat of civil war. Aiming for a conciliatory tone, he reminds the American people of their commonality.
