Ex-academics can stay connected to the academic things that they're passionate about. I've met people who ended up getting into blogging or podcasting as a way to maintain a presence in that space, but with a focus more on translating academic materials for popular audiences. That can be one way that people do it. And I think every former academic I know has put an awful lot of time into coaching other people from their discipline who are leaving. It's not an easy thing to do. Most of us are eager to make time to help people out by talking to them and advising them as they do what we did. So those are three options for how you can engage.
