The fight over the fate of Philadelphia's public school system was felt so deeply in this fight. The movement reached into neighborhoods and community organizations that would not maybe have traditionally identified as left, but pulling them into what ended up becoming a pretty cohesive struggle. When you started to see the results a few years later, you know, with Helen running for and winning city council in 2015, Kendra Brooks in 2019, these fights over the school district were changing an overall tide.
Featuring Nikil Saval and Helen Gym on how the history of Philadelphia social movements brought Nikil into the state senate and has made Helen, a long-time public education organizer, a frontrunner in the mayoral race.
