The Politics of Distraction
I think that when you create a society with sufficient surplus that people are no longer worried about, starving even if they reach the end of history, as it were, it becomes easier and easier to convince people that it's in their best interest to have more decisions taken away from them. And then the technologies to do this become so much more powerful. The distraction, the exhaustion, the demoralization, all of which sort of are coupled with a sort of a consumerist bounty That is present even in the midst of economic precarity or wage stagnation for large sectors of the American economy. It just, like, it becomes- The distraction becomes the goal.
