In 1854, Dr. Palmer is more in debt than he's ever been. He takes out a very hefty 13,000-pound insurance policy on his long-suffering wife. And she, of course, has had depression because she's lost all these children. But her death comes in the middle of a deadly cholera outbreak. The symptoms were consistent with cholera.
