The Importance of Transcendence in Biennales
The loadedness of the very bricks and mortar of these spaces brings an element of subject matter into the work. Lauren Succo again from South Africa did this extraordinary performance in St Luke's bombed out church where you know she appeared naked but with sort of awful cuffs and collar, white socks and bar shoes. that speaks to what separates a goodbye new from an exhibition if you like. I thought it was extraordinary seeing white people being made to wear gorilla masks bound hands being made to dance one of whom was the director of a poor biennial by the way.
