The Idea of a Good Death
The idea of dying a good death with self control, without displaying any sign of pain or fear was something that people thought about in the roman empire. This is a really common idea. Sometimes sceptics look back at early christian martyrs, and people like sigmund froyd describe them as something like a suicide cult. They don't quite understand why would people do this. And into this staps the figure of jesus of nazareth. The kind of death he dies is unusual. These sort of ar very self composed, and to us, very avoidable deaths. But death and how you die is seen to be the kind of capstone on your life
