The Crisis of Disaffiliation in the Christian Church
In the early 19 seventies, roughly three % of our country would have claimed the status of none when asked about religious affiliation. To day, that numb has reached an astonishing 26%. And among the young, the numbers are worse, still, reaching forty% of those under 30 claim to have no religious affiliation. One need not be an expert in statistics to discern this does not bode well for the future of the churches. This is not the time to retreat, but rather to go out, as paul tillick said in his german mit klingendem spiel, confident in what we uniquely bring.
