The History of Folklore

The study of popular antiquities had really kicked in through the 17th century. In part as an attempt to come to terms with changes in popular belief and custom around the tune-alt of the English Revolution and Civil War. John Aubrey for example who died in 1697 was fascinated by supernatural phenomena and omens, ghost stories and the like. He also promoted the view that all this old stuff that was known before the Civil War was vanishing as a result of wider literacy and political developments.
