How to Pre-Plan a Mystery

Howard Kurtz: I know you've said several times that you have started with a mystery and figured it out halfway through this whole luxury. You do pre-plan a lot more now than you used to. How did you go about doing that when you didn't have the luxury? In many cases, I was just flying it by the seat of my pants and dropping clues,. maybe, or actual clues. He says using your red herrings right can really make this satisfying.
