The Importance of Sanskrit
When the British conquered India in 18th century, they intended to govern as far as possible within the Indian tradition. It was found that nobody could read Sanskrit and translate it into English. A man named Charles Wilkins went to Benares and put himself in school with the Brahmins there. Then he published a translation of the Bhagavad Gita in English,. Bhagvad Gita or Dialogues of Krishna and Arjuna in 1785. This is the beginning of the movement towards the mystical point of view in the Christian tradition, Emerson Thoreau Carlisle Gita.
