Slavery in the Ottoman Empire
Many high up people might have come from slavery, particularly in the Ottoman period. But hardly any slaves became high up people as a percentage of the slaves. And I suppose that's why slave armies develop is because they owe all their allegiance to you and not to anyone else. The problem is exactly what you say that you see this again in Mamluk Egypt - solidarity builds up among them.
