Sociologist Robert Nisbet talks about the need for associations that have some claim of authority upon you. "Intermediary institutions are absolutely crucial," he says. They acculturate us to what it means to be a human being and how we should relate to others. The state is by design not meant to give you a sense of purpose and identity as a human being, but an arena in which you can create a meaningful life on your own.
