The Effect of Opiates on Respiratory Depression
The effect of opiates on respiratory depression is greatly affected by a variety of things, most importantly, obviously the dose. Older people need a much smaller dose to cause respiratory depression and the presence of other CNS depressants such as renal insufficiency or hypocapnea. So being aware of these things will help you avoid causing respiratory depression when you don't want to.
