The Seven Layer Prison
The idea is that these celestial spheres surrounding the world are literally planes of existence. The Archons are like the gatekeeper guardian of those different planes of existence and a lot of Gnostic beliefs were that you have to be able to satisfy the questions maybe like a Sphinx or outwit in order to get to the next level. So there's this idea that it's like a seven or eight or whatever however many layer prison and there are prison guards wardens that you must try to satisfy to escape. This is the Gnostic disposition though that toward being itself toward existence that we're in a prison that it's miserable that it shouldn't be this way.
