How Did John Bell See the Impossible Done?
John Bell was a student when Baum's papers came out in the early 1950s. He'd been told that there was only one way of thinking about quantum physics and that that had been proven actually by von Neumann. And so he sat down and worked out a variation on the EPR thought experiment, a different version with a twist. It led him to the conclusion using that thought experiment and the, you know, fairly simple line of reasoning: No, there was no way out that the choice was not between something going faster than the speed of light or nothing at all.
