The Role of Hysteria in Depression

Do we have any clinical evidence today to say that you're getting somewhere? I don't think so, because with other kinds of psychological behaviour there are many different types. And yet they are all depression and psychoanalytically, we trace them back to experiences of loss or abandonment or disappointment of one kind or another. The word hysteria covers a range from a kind of mild hysterical outburst in daily conversation, all the way up to the extreme forms of hysterical neurosis. There is even a reversal category, hysterical psychosis, where the person is actually quite mentally ill on many, many different dimensions, but expressing that mental illness in an overdramatised hysterical fashion.
