The Differences in Willingness of Republicans to Compromise
There aren't gains to be had from coming forward and saying, i believe in big government. But you can get traction when you say, i see a population that's suffering. We have an obligation to do something on behalf of that. And so for democrats, there are a set of ideol al commitments to be had but they're not articulated as ideological commitments. They're articulated as the exigencies of responding to horror and suffering. Then actually, in terms of their true beliefs, there is an ideological component that's equally held.
