Jerry coin: How can the universe be determined and you have any kind of free will at all? He says we don't really choose because it all was already set up and moving forward. The more complex an organism is there are a range of choices you can make, he adds. And out of that do we have volition i mean you're a scientist we live in a determined universe with cause and effect where how do you explain where volition and choice comes from he asks.

One of America's leading cell biologists, she is the author of a bestselling textbook on genetics, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has served as President of the American Society of Cell Biology and of the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science. She lives in Chilmark, Massachusetts, on Martha's Vineyard. Her book, The Sacred Depths of Nature: How Life Has Emerged and Evolved, is now in a second edition. She currently serves as president of the Religious Naturalist Association.
