Each generation trained its boys to define masculinity as risking disposability of their life. If they didn't risk disposability in war, then they risked disposability in a more subtle way in the work place. Men who want to be a musician or an actor and do something really fulfilling to them, realize that the fulfilling occupations buy alarge, pay less. So men give up the glint in their eyes, their dream, and instead of being an elementary school teacher, they become a superintendent of schools.
