Is Zen a Little Bigger on Regiment Than Other Buddhist Traditions?
I think definitely Japanese Zen, especially as it was brought to North America, is there's a lot of emphasis on ritual. And Zen posture. In some ways of thinking about meditation in the Zen or in Chinese chan tradition, the idea is that the ritual, the posture of the sitting is the meditation. I should say by way of background, my father was raised as an Irish Catholic, very, very severe, heavy dose of Irish Catholicism. But he always had a very kind of ecumenical attitude towards religion.
