I was particularly surprised by the comparison you draw between the critical series and the Chinese literary. While critical series are often associated with radicalism, many of their behaviors are quite traditional,. I have no access to the residues of mandarinism in China today. So I would hope that it's still useful, but I'm not sure how much I could say it has purchase in Kitepper China or in the West in the 21st century.
