Strauss often employs the following principle. He says, you should read a writer the way he reads others. So we have to acknowledge on his own terms, using his own reasoning, the possibility that he writes between the lines. It would be completely inconsistent for him not to do that. Yes, he left breadcrumbs and tidbits. And no, I can't point all of them out for you because that would in some sense defeat the purpose.
