In the open metaverse you expect these objects to be able to move around between servers and interact. And so what we need is not just a file format for specific types of data that we lay out in advance but also file formats for any type of data that any programmer might write in one of these programs. There are some really interesting web standards that are already assessed and are already widely deployed now along these lines. In Fortnite it was kind of the first game that runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch and now supports gameplay with players in all of these platforms together in a single gameplay session.
