The Evolution of Dire Wolfes

Dire wolves and gray wolves have a common ancestor about 5.8 million years ago, but after that they diverged. So what was interesting is that we always assume that dire wolves were just gray wolves. And so when we finally got DNA out of them, the reason it took so long is because the stuff at La Brea where most of dire wolves are coming from covered in tar, not a great place to find DNA.
