You can still use TOTP with your computer. The biggest risk of TOTP is phishing attacks. VPNs I think are overrated as hell. Message gaps, I think are actually also kind of overrated. An email is where you're gonna get the most bang for your buck out of those three if you can only pick one. You might be able to keep a phone closer to your hand and it might be easier to use your phone instead of a hardware key.
