How to Measure the Speed of Stars
Astronomers look at two different things. One is what's called proper motion. This is how the stars appear to be moving relative to one another in the plane of the sky. Gaia was designed to do like no other telescope has been able to do previously. It can measure distant galaxies, quasars, bright other things that are so far away that we can't perceive their motion.
