Debate Update: Obfuscated Arguments Problem

AI Safety Fundamentals: Alignment

CHAPTER

The Problem With Recursion Payments

Dishonest debaters can repeatedly ask the same question and try to recurse into it whenever they have control. This means the debate can go on indefinitely without reaching a note that the judge can understand. If we decide which part of the debate torecurse into by randomly selecting between the honest and dishonest debater, then the dishonest debater will be preferred 98% of the time. We use a proper scoring rule, KL distance, or informally the amount of evidence for one debater over another, to score the accuracy of the debater's probabilistic claims.
