Many nest building fish have sticky eggs to stick the eggs to places, coral, or to whatever they are laying eggs on. This acts as a cement to build their nest and keep the eggs from floating away. So it is not much of a stretch to think that you just start sticking them to the male, just gloom to the male's belly instead of the rock. Now with that selective pressure carrying things further, it becomes very easy to see how that could progress absolute. Some signathids to day do have sticky x. Whether that's individually evolved or ancestral, that's e to say.
