The Pro-Cigarette Campaign of Edward Bernays
Edward Bernays ran ads suggesting that emancipated women ought to smoke cigarettes. He took advantage of his famous uncle hiring the psychoanalyst Dr. A.A. Brill who had studied under Sigmund Freud and paying him to consult on his ad campaign. In 1928 American tobacco's revenue grew by thirty two million dollars which is equivalent to roughly every dollar in 2019 money. Most of that additional sales came of course from the increase in sales for lucky strikes.
