The Importance of Meaningless Responses
One of my favorite patients in history is a person who had what's referred to as HOCD. He had intrusive thoughts about being gay, and many people with HOCD tend to be perfectionistic. And amazingly, he figured out on his own that the best path for recovery for him would be to engage in the least thought out therapeutic responses. So he invented this word, ischhedity. It doesn't mean anything. But for him, it represented a nonsense word which said to his brain when his brain brought up topics related to him being gay: You are so not important to me I'm going to respond with a word that doesn't even exist.
