Pablo Casales discovered the cello suites as a boy in a dusty music store in Barcelona. For a long time, the suites were not an important work, a concert work. They were considered exercises, a way for cellists to learn how to play the cello better. There was something methodical about them. Robert Johnson can sketch these incredible dramas of sin and redemption, struggle and loss.
