How to Avoid Lightning Storms in the Backcountry

The most common scenario here is lightning strikes a tree. The charge goes down to the base of the tree trunk at the ground and then emanates outward. This is how these elk and the wind river range were killed. Stay away from tall trees and other tall objects like hudu spires or vertical surfaces that you might find on ridges and peaks.
