When you can't use public channels of communication, people tend to rely on informal networks of connection. The philosopher cicila bah defines gossip as being an informal mode of communication about someone absent. It's this kind of informal network of knowledge that can fly under the radar among subjugated peoples. For a lot of people, especially women of color, for instance, it's happening in the intersticial moments - passing by each other at the market or stopping by some one's house before husband comes home.
