Even in the 90s only a third of us households had a personal computer. I think it this history has kind of undermined assumptions we have about the inherent popularity of computing. The internet is something the internet sells the personal computer in a way that the personal computer could not sell itself yes.

It's hard to imagine life without smartphones, but it wasn't so long ago that the idea of a home computer was a novelty. When was the exact moment that the "personal computer" became truly "personal," and how did computer ownership and literacy become inexorably tied to our lives?
