Can Women Exert Political Power?

In the early modern period, especially in the automan empire, all officials where men. But that did not mean that woman would not wield political power. The vali de sultan, for example, could be a very powerful and influential figure. In the first half of the seventeenth century, power was effectively in the hands of ma karkusan sultan - mother of two ottoman sultans. This period became known as the sultante of woman, the sultanat of women.
