The History of Sensory Substitution
In the 1890s a Polish ophthalmologist developed a crude device for people who were blind. In 1960 another group in Poland picked up the ball and ran with it. They recognized that hearing is critical for the blind so they turned to passing in light information via touch. There have been all kinds of incarnations of sensory substitution for the blind.
