I understand their problems with this analogy between the mafia and the Romans. There are also benefits to it, which is actually a pretty good analogy. I think the Romans take that promise of protection more seriously than perhaps organized crime does. They call feedase - we get our word fidelity from this. This is trust or faith. Everyone should want to be like that.
