The Battle of Gallipoli
The Dardanelles were straits that connected Constantinople to the Mediterranean. If they could have captured this, they would have had a warm water port. Russia was patronizing Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire and offering some Russian citizenship at this time. The Ottomans suspected the Russians of not wanting their own Armenians loyal to them as we can't possibly get into it here.
