Some people have argued a that the world wars of the twentieth century contributed sively to secularization. I find that that explanation very compelling. But if you look at the united states on the whole, what you see is that people are more likely to profess religious belief and practise religious belief as you go up the social ladder. Still, there are more examples we could throw in there, but i think that's enough to shed serious a doubt on the thesis that material prosperity explains secularization.
