The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. It would allow people to record their own speech and have it typed out for them. The invention became an international sensation, but Edison didn't anticipate the mass market appeal of his achievement. A few short weeks later, on december seventh, 18 77, edison's life as a private person came to an end. He passed away from heart failure at age 78.
