The Moon Is Our Oldest Clock
The moon is our oldest clock, the singing atoms are youngest. A second didn't become real until Christian Huygens built the first pendulum clock in 1656. Before 1967, a second was defined not by reference to any atom, but by the motion of Earth itself. Between the two is a millennia-long march to invent more precise ways to measure time and define our place in the universe.
