Elizabeth Bishop was lesbian in an age when it was difficult to come out. Gay pride, gay liberation was on the rise but still she was quite suspicious of it having lived for 68 years feeling that for her safety really she needed to conceal her love life. It also gave her a sense of community with the women and the men I mean many of her friends were gay men as well throughout her life.
