Dominicans and Franciscans were at the forefront of this intellectual blooming of the 13th and 14th century. The monks are a bit slow, partly because they live cloistered lives in the monastery. And let's face it, student life in the Middle Ages was pretty corrupt. So you can understand why the monks kind of steered clear of it initially.
